CEVAW announces two-day conference to discuss Niagara’s Response to Domestic Violence
The Coalition to End Violence Against Women (CEVAW) is hosting a two-day conference to discuss Niagara’s response to domestic violence. Funded by the Ontario Women’s Directorate and the Ministry of Community and Social Services Niagara’s first domestic violence report card was completed earlier this year. This report analyzes the extent of services (from 2008 to present) to families across the Niagara Region. Statistics and occurrence rates were gathered from the Niagara Regional Police Services, Women’s Place of South Niagara and Gillian’s Place. Caseload percentages and status delivery statistics were provided by Probation and Parole Services and from agencies that provide counselling to women and children and statistics from the Partner Assault Program.
What: Hosted by CEVAW, this two-day conference will explore Niagara’s first domestic violence report card which is expected to start a conversation and engage the community about the effects violence against women has in our region. The report has established a base-line account which will be used as a comparison for future reports and findings. In addition, this report resulted in an overall regional picture of the current response to domestic violence and will be a resource for educating the public about violence against women.
Who: CEVAW is a collective voice of organizations from the Niagara Region that is working toward ending violence against women by raising public awareness, educating, sharing information, networking and identifying and breaking down systematic barriers that perpetuate violence. Guest speakers at the conference include Lieutenant Mark Wynn, Dr. Stephen D. Hart and Ian DeGeer, each speaking and building upon the findings of this report.
Where: These findings and more information regarding Niagara’s Domestic Violence Report Card will be discussed at a two-day conference at the Crowne Plaza in Niagara Falls from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm (time is approximate) .
When: Media are invited to attend the conference at the Crowne Plaza, 5685 Falls Avenue, June 14 & 15. Registration is between 8:00 am - 9:30 am and tickets are $65 each. Interviews with CEVAW Chair, Ruthann Brown (Executive Director of Women’s Place of South Niagara) and Vice Chair Anne Armstrong (Executive Director of Gillian’s Place) or guest speakers Lieutenant Mark Wynn, Dr. Stephen D. Hart and Ian DeGeer can be arranged by contacting Haley Bateman at 905-356-3933 ext 240. Media kits will be provided.
